Pitch darkness descended over the small space and consumed all of my senses. Hua doused another bowlful of brew on the hissing rocks. The strong scent of tobacco and gusts of steam overwhelmed me. During the sweat, we all had to share prayers and issues we wanted to resolve. The darkness of the hut made this all seem anonymous and so everyone’s vulnerabilities came out to play. We all knew one another’s darkest concerns, saddest moments and inner demons. We were all open, non-judgmental and loving. I could feel the warm embrace of shared humanity and once the sweat was over, the shift in everyone was enormous. I felt alive, reinvigorated, my head and chest felt clear, it was an amazing experience. I was able to witness the benefits to people who experienced this ceremony. I was always intrigued by Indigenous traditional practices and my life journey has taught me that the best way to learn about something is to immerse myself in it.

After attending this smudge ceremony, I began to appreciate the importance of having a medium for relaying untold stories. I was inspired to launch ‘‘The Deep Circle’’; a free space for anyone to virtually come together in solidarity to share stories, arts, and experiences. I have always been drawn to enriching personal narratives because behind each patient is a lifetime of stories and relationships that impact their preferences, values, and their medical-decision-making process. I am an avid supporter and advocate of implementing Indigenous traditional practices into Indigenous patient care. I am wholeheartedly convinced that these traditional practices can be revitalized and incorporated into patient care for the purpose of addressing the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of Indigenous peoples.

Further, eliciting the voices of others helped me to realize why I am so compelled to pursue medicine. Each experience has taught me the importance of real communication in healthcare: paying close attention to how people feel and the meaning of what they say. I am enriched by the individuals I have encountered; I marvel at their unique stories, and I appreciate how each person is validated and empowered in exchange for sharing his/her history. Our interactions sit at the heart of humanistic sensibilities to healthcare; I am determined to become a physician, where I can help to relay stories that otherwise might remain untold.

The Deep circle is a safe haven, it's a place where we meet virtually to share any stories, arts, music, poetry, and experiences with each other. It’s a place of no-judgment and love. A place where anyone and everyone is welcomed with open arms.

Each week we discuss a new topic/theme, and those interested can share stories related to that theme or even their creative artwork or poetry related to that topic. For those who are interested in joining these virtual sessions, please fill out your contact information in the box below (at the end of this page) and I will send you a welcome package along with the zoom details. The topics to be discussed will be sent a week prior to the scheduled session.

Can’t wait to meet you all soon!
